Spotlighting Good Practice: Lancashire’s Approach to ASYE Induction

One of the things I love about running my podcast is the opportunity to shine a light on great practice in social work education. Recently, I invited the team from Lancashire County Council’s Social Work Academy to join me and share how they support newly qualified social workers during their ASYE year.

Lancashire are doing fantastic work, and it was a privilege to host them. We talked about their ASYE induction programme, the challenges new practitioners face, and why ongoing development is so important. I also deliver a dedicated session on communication skills as part of their induction, so it was great to reflect on how that fits into the bigger picture of preparing social workers for practice.

Of course, nothing in social work is perfect. Every authority faces challenges, and it’s important to acknowledge those honestly. But it’s equally important to create space to recognise and celebrate when good work is happening. Lancashire’s induction programme is a great example of that balance: supporting staff to develop, listening to what’s needed, and investing in the next generation of practitioners.

Featuring authorities like Lancashire on the podcast is about more than just sharing ideas — it’s a way of highlighting and learning from what’s working well. Training is one part of that story, but so is giving space to showcase approaches that others across the country can take inspiration from.

If you’re planning your ASYE induction and want your newly qualified social workers to build strong, practical communication skills from day one, I’d love to support you. My session on communication has already been delivered as part of Lancashire’s ASYE programme, and it can be tailored to your team too as a training session or keynote.
